Our American White Oak staircases are one of the most popular options that we provide. American white oak is the trade name for a type of hardwood originating from the Quercus genus. Most often imported from Eastern USA, this is one of the finest materials that can be used in any woodwork project. It is a hard and heavy wood, with low stiffness and great overall strength, so when you opt for our American White Oak staircase, you know you’ll have a final result that will really stand the test of time, which is essential for such a high traffic area in your home. As you can see, it has a light coloured sap-wood, while the heartwood can vary from light to dark brown. The American White Oak that we use most often comes in pale yellow to biscuit tones - sometimes with a tinge of pink. It can also have distinctive rings that add a touch of character to each and every staircase that we build! Another benefit that comes hand in hand with opting for a staircase that is made of American white oak is that this type of wood is impenetrable to liquids. In fact, it’s so water-resistant that it’s a popular material used to create boats in the boating industry! Another option that we offer is European Oak staircases. European oak, sometimes referred to as French Oak - rather unsurprisingly originates in Europe. It is a slow-growing timber with astounding strength, making this another great option if you’re looking for durability and a staircase that will last the years without the need for interference, repairs or replacements. The slow growth of the European Oak also creates one of its other most desirable features - it’s distinctive grain pattern. The grain is tight, smaller and finer than options like American White Oak, so if this is something that you’re looking for, European Oak could be the option for you! This oak is another material that is popular in the boating industry, as well as barrel making, which bears testament to its waterproof nature - again, ensuring spills won’t irrevocably damage your staircase over the years. Another perk of choosing European oak as a material for your staircase is that it has a naturally high tannin content. This means that it is highly resistant to insect and fungal attacks - again, increasing the longevity of your staircase. In terms of colour, this oak is slightly darker than its American cousin.
