Hip to Gable Loft Conversions
Hip to gable loft conversions aim to enlarge the relatively small existing space in properties with hipped roofs. The ridge line of the hipped roof if extended to create a gable end roof, which will generally require planning permission. The additional roof space can enable a larger rear dormer to be constructed to maximise the interior space. This type of loft extension is most popular in traditional semi-detached houses, chalets and bungalows.
Dormer Loft Conversions
Dormer loft conversions are the most common type of loft extension; the roof is reshaped, and a vertical wall is constructed from the bottom of the sloping roof, with a flat roof to give greater internal height and space. There are many variations but mostly the dormer is located on the side or rear of the roof. French windows can also be fitted for additional light and ventilation. Planning permission is still often required.
