American White Oak STAIRCASES
Originating primarily across Eastern parts of the United States, American white oak is an attractive, yet sturdy type of timber. It has a subtle natural lustre, and it is also highly resistant to rot. American White Oak comes in light yellow-brown to pale biscuit tones, often a pink tinge to the wood can be noted, depending on the region of origin.
It is extremely tough and heavy, this is due to the slow rate that Oak grows. The growth rings in an Oak are tightly packed, this provides a water-tight fine grain and a hardwearing exterior, ideal for staircases.
You can also use wood stain, varnish or paint for your finish – although if you are intending to paint the stairs, we would advise you to choose a cheaper softwood for any components that are going to be covered up.
European Oak Staircases
Another top quality, premium timber is European Oak, renowned for it’s durability and fantastic strength. Whilst sometimes slightly darker than it’s American cousin, it’s tone is more regular, showing golden shades of brown from a deep tan to a lighter biscuit. It can however, produce an attractive silver-grey shade on the end of the grain, when sawn.
European Oak has a smaller, fine and distinctive grain than the American Oak. It’s adaptable and provides excellent steam-bending pliability, working well with wax and varnish. European Oak is rarer than American White and can be more expensive.
MDF and Softwood Staircases
MDF Staircases offer a great solution for apartments, conversion flats, commercial and residential developments. It’s affordable, easy to maintain and relatively pliable. It’s tough and works well with a multitude of finishes, such as timber, tiles, and even carpet. It can be painted with ease in your choice of colour.
MDF is a fibreboard, engineered in a medium-density to be hard wearing. It is manufactured with wood fibres, and then mixed with wax and resin in tremendously high temperatures to form panels. MDF doesn’t shrink or warp like some other materials.
The MDF treads that we use are almost double the thickness of normal staircases at 25mm. It’s obvious, the deeper the tread, the tougher the stairs. This allows a for a greater footfall which is ideal for communal areas or busy family homes.
Standard sizing (straight or u-shaped) or custom-built to suit your design, our stairways can provide a reliable staircase solution.
